Grain's Seedling Prize

Contest is closed.

We are pleased to announce Grain's inaugural Seedling Prize for 2026! Grain’s founders believed in seeding ideas and harvesting great writing. This new contest aims to keep that harvest going. Each year we’ll announce a new theme in an attempt to seed an idea—to get you thinking and writing. The task: Let your idea grow, write it down, then submit your seedling.

What’s special about this contest? You’re not limited to genre! Does the theme inspire you to write a poem? A short story? A personal essay, a one-act play, a brochure, a photo journal? Just keep your submission brief; seedlings are small. You’re not planting an entire crop. To be specific, your submission should be no longer than three 8.5"x11" pages.

Contest opens May 1, 2026

2026 Theme: Censorship

We invite submissions that interpret the theme of censorship. All submissions will be read and selected by Grain's team of editors. The winning pieces will best exemplify the theme, regardless of genre. Here's some things we associate with censorship, to help get you thinking and writing: cancel culture, A.I., fake news, deep fakes, Photoshop, government coverups, redacted files, freedom, free speech, self-censorship, policies, laws, grants, book banning...

FAQ's

You may enter as many times as you like, provided you include another entry fee for each entry beyond the first; therefore, two Canadian entries would cost $60.

No. If you are sending more than one piece per submission, send only one cover page that includes all the information for every piece of writing you are entering up to three pages. [Example, a one-page piece could be mostly visual and another two-page piece mostly text]. Don't forget to include your complete contact information!

Your Grain subscription will be increased by four issues for each entry fee received beyond the first. So, if you enter twice, you will receive a two-year (eight-issue) subscription to Grain Magazine. If you already have a subscription to Grain, we'll simply add another four issues to your current subscription for each entry fee received. If you’d rather your additional entry fee go towards a subscription for someone else, please indicate this on your cover letter, and provide your friend’s name and mailing address.

No. Winners and the names of the winning pieces will be posted on our website and social media in December. Winners will be published in the Winter 2027 issue of Grain.

Because we are using a postmarked deadline, if the deadline falls on a day when the post offices are closed, we will accept entries postmarked on the next business day.

Selections for the Reader's Choice Prize will be posted on Grain's website. Readers will have one week to cast their votes for their favourite selection. The winner of the Reader's Choice Prize will be announced, along with the 1st and 2nd prize winners, in December and published in the Winter 2027 issue of Grain.
